Creating supportive music classrooms, first and foremost, begins with the music teacher.  In this pedagogical perspective for music educators, we will discuss what it looks like to create a supportive music classroom for all learners while creating scaffolds for neurodiverse learners to benefit all students. Introduction

This introductory module will introduce you to the instructors, and provide an overview of the class.

Defining Neurodivergence

Neurodivergent: adj., differing in mental or neurological function from what is considered typical or normal (frequently used regarding autism spectrum disorders) – Oxford English Dictionary.

Reframing Our Perspective

Some neurodivergent students struggle because of systems and processes in our classrooms that don’t give them a chance to show off their strengths. Every student is different, and recognizing children's brains work in many ways can help you support each of them, regardless of our awareness of their diagnosed differences. Accommodations are tools that help all students succeed.

Research and Application for Music Education

Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapy interventions can address a variety of healthcare & educational goals.

Support Student Success

Music therapists use music activities to work on non-musical skills. In a music therapy setting, the therapist could use drumming to work on a person’s motor skills. Or they might use singing to improve speech, relaxation, or stress management. We can also use some of these activities in the general music room to teach concepts and support our students’ needs!
