Summary
There is a cliche in the Dalcroze community that “The Body is the First Instrument.” This is something that takes a bit of faith to embrace unless you’ve actually experienced it. The way I sometimes put it, which I believe draws a bright line between our work and the way movement is approached in many classroom settings, is that we believe that movement IS music. It doesn’t simply represent it, symbolize it, or accompany it. The movement simply IS a musical expression.
Now, this can be a difficult pill to swallow if you haven’t had the experience of moving in this particular way. The Dalcroze Method is a great way to teach musical concepts by exploring the way they make the body FEEL. This kind of training prepares students by developing stronger musical instincts, intuition, attention to nuance, rhythmic execution, and aural skills.
Here is the class outline:
A Dalcroze PerspectiveDiscover how the 100-year-old Dalcroze Eurhythmics method uses movement as a primary pathway to musical understanding, treating the body as an essential instrument. Through activities like the Four Poses, Three Dreams, and spatial awareness games, students develop rhythm, melody, harmony, and musical expression through physical experience. Explore strategies for classroom management, adapting to diverse learners, and building a movement-based practice that enhances musical instincts and improves instrumental and vocal performance. 13 sections
