Course Description

This course is designed to empower elementary general music teachers with innovative strategies and techniques to elevate classroom engagement in the elementary general music classroom. Students will explore a range of approaches and creative methodologies to engage and motivate young learners in elementary general music classrooms.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explore methods for student engagement through Bruner’s modes of progression including enactive, iconic, and symbolic learning.
  • Describe and develop strategies to cultivate a positive, safe, and welcoming classroom learning environment.
  • Describe appropriate strategies, pedagogies, and methodologies to facilitate student engagement in the elementary general music classroom.
  • Describe and implement effective strategies for creating a positive and inclusive classroom management in the elementary general music classroom.
  • Explore culturally responsive and inclusive strategies for engagement in the elementary general music classroom

Prerequisites

Bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate in the area of music.

  • The instructor will provide additional course readings, which students will access through JSTOR, SAGE Journals, and other online journals. 

Course Format & Technology

Our courses utilize a custom Learning Management System (LMS). They are conducted asynchronously and remotely and feature independent activities. You will receive a suggested timeline for completing each reading and assignment. You can correspond with your instructor and submit all assignments within the LMS.

  • Personal device with reliable internet connection
  • Access to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, or alternatively, Google Docs and Google Slides, is necessary (you can sign up for a free Google account if you do not already have one).

Online Activities will include:

  • Videos which showcase various skills, techniques, and suggestions for enhancing student engagement
  • Required reading that encompass articles and book chapters
  • Weekly online assignments and projects. Each task is designed to help you develop a classroom engagement plan for your students and enhance your approach to creating a compassionate elementary music classroom.
Refund Policy:

Within 14 days: For a period of 14 days before the start of the course, a full refund will be given on the total amount of tuition fees paid, less processing fees and registrar fees, at the time of cancellation. The student must notify Music ConstructED in writing via email or letter received on or before the 14-day period. If you apply for a refund within 14 days of the course start date, our refund policy does not apply. However, you can transfer to a different MCED course by paying the registration fee of $60 per graduate credit.

Introduction to Classroom Engagement

The introductory module for this graduate course is designed to orient and prepare you for the semester ahead. This module will ensure you are well informed about the course and adequately prepared for upcoming assignments and projects. This lesson module requires approximately 15.9 hours to complete.

Bruner's Modes of Progression

This module introduces you to Jerome Bruner’s Modes of Progression, emphasizing cognitive development and its application in educational settings. It is composed of three main components: Readings pertaining to Bruner’s Modes of Progression, a series of videos, and assignments. This module will equip you with a deeper understanding of Bruner’s educational psychology principles and their practical applications for the elementary general music classroom. This lesson module requires approximately 9.1 hours to complete

Creating a Positive Classroom Environment

This module focuses on strategies and philosophies for fostering a positive and supportive classroom environment. It consists of two main components: readings and assignments. This module will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to create and maintain a positive classroom environment that supports student development and learning. This lesson module requires approximately 10.6 hours to complete

Student Engagement

This module explores strategies for enhancing student engagement in elementary general music classrooms. It includes readings, a video, and an assignment aimed at understanding and implementing effective engagement techniques. This module will equip you with theoretical knowledge and practical strategies for fostering active student participation and engagement in music education. This lesson module requires approximately 8.7 hours to complete

Inclusive Classroom Engagement

This module addresses strategies for creating an inclusive classroom environment that fosters engagement among all students, particularly those at risk. It includes readings, a video, and assignments focused on inclusive pedagogies and classroom management. This module will provide you with essential insights and practical tools for promoting inclusive engagement and effective classroom management in diverse educational settings. This lesson module requires approximately 9.4 hours to complete

Culturally Responsive Teaching and Restorative Justice

This module delves into culturally responsive teaching methods and restorative justice practices in elementary general music classrooms. It includes readings, videos, and assignments designed to equip educators with strategies for fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment. This module will provide you with essential knowledge and practical strategies for implementing culturally responsive teaching and restorative justice practices to create a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment. This lesson module requires approximately 7.3 hours to complete

Comprehensive Approach to Effective Classroom Engagement

This final project module requires students to synthesize and apply the principles learned throughout the course to develop a comprehensive plan for a hypothetical elementary general music classroom. The project focuses on creating an effective, inclusive, and compassionate learning environment. This module will enable you to demonstrate your understanding and ability to create a well-rounded and effective approach to music education in elementary classrooms, highlighting their growth and learning throughout the course. This lesson module requires approximately 15 hours to complete.
