Summary

In the PD series "Application of the Power of Music," the focus shifts from understanding the power of music to applying it effectively in the classroom. The series emphasizes engaging all students, particularly neurodiverse learners, in music education. Drawing on both personal experiences and established educational principles, the series advocates for individualized approaches to teaching, encouraging educators to build strong relationships with special educators and parents. By gathering insights on each student’s unique needs, teachers can create an inclusive environment where neurodiverse students thrive.

This professional development is the fourth course in the music therapy collection.

The course, Engagement and Inclusion of All Students, educators will examine barriers to inclusion, such as attitudinal and organizational challenges, and develop strategies to overcome these obstacles. Teachers will learn to employ differentiated instruction and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, focusing on students' strengths while fostering a positive classroom culture.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how music can resonate with all students, regardless of ability.
  • Identify techniques to engage all students, especially those with neurodiverse needs. 
  • Develop skills to tailor music lessons for diverse learning styles.
  • Learn to collect and analyze relevant information about neurodiverse students.
  • Understand the roles of special education staff to enhance collaboration.
  • Learn the positive impacts of inclusive practices on all students.
  • Identify and develop strategies to address barriers to inclusion and implement differentiated instruction.

The course will employ a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and interactive applications to facilitate learning. 

 

 "Hello! My name is Melissa Reinhardt and I am a board certified music therapist. I am here to let you know about a new course offered by MusicConstructED called “Making the Most of the Power of Music.” I am very excited to be offering this course and I hope you will join me as we learn about the how’s and why’s of the power of music. With over a 30 year career in music therapy, I will be sharing my knowledge with you in 3 main sections: Music Therapy and Music Education, The Power of Music and finally, the application of the power of music. In the application portion of this course, I will be sharing information specific to neurodiverse learners. I hope that you will join me!"

Engagement of All Students in the Music Classroom

Discover music's profound impact on people of all abilities, emphasizing its universal accessibility and therapeutic potential. Look at real-life case studies and theoretical frameworks to understand how music goes beyond disabilities, creating connections and enabling expression in various environments.

How to Learn about Neurodiverse Students

Learn strategies for effectively engaging neurodiverse students in music therapy and education, emphasizing that each student's unique needs must be considered. Educators are encouraged to gather information about their students, collaborate with special education staff, and utilize special education documentation, such as IEPs and 504 plans, to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Educational Inclusion 

The history of educational laws has significantly shaped opportunities for students with special needs, ensuring they receive equitable access to education alongside their non-disabled peers. Current practices emphasize inclusion and differentiated instruction, focusing on student strengths and fostering a supportive learning environment.
